BHOPAL: Eight members of an extended family died on Tuesday when their SUV lost control and fell into a deep ravine near Mahadev Ghat in the Banwar Chowki area around 11am.
The victims, all residents of Bhita Fuller village in Jabalpur, were returning from a pilgrimage to Jatashankar Dham.
Fifteen people were crammed into the SUV when it veered off the road and fell into the gorge.
Six people died instantly, while two more succumbed shortly after. The deceased have been identified as Laung Bai, Halki Bai, Sampat Bai, Guddi Bai, Rachna, Tamanna, and Shibbu (son of Hari). All were from the same family.
Rescue operations were launched immediately, with local authorities rushing to the site to assist and investigate.
The fatal incident comes amid a string of deadly road tragedies in Madhya Pradesh. Just a day earlier, six people, including a child, were killed near Bamhori Dhaba in Raisen district when a Tempo Traveller carrying a family returning from a wedding in Bihar crashed into a culvert and fell into a ditch. The bride and groom were among the injured survivors.
Later the same day in Shahdol, a pickup vehicle carrying wedding guests overturned after hitting a motorcycle on Karaundia Gada Road, killing six people and injuring 24 others.
