CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann was admitted to a private hospital in Mohali on Wednesday night with signs of inflammation in pulmonary artery, which is creating pressure on his heart and fluctuation in blood pressure.
He will continue to stay in the hospital on Thursday night and doctors will make a decision on his condition after receiving some more test reports on Friday.
The Punjab govt, however, described his hospital stay as "regular check-up."
"CM Mann was admitted to a private hospital for regular check-up. Various tests are being conducted to assess the CM's health. Doctors have found signs of inflammation in an artery of his lungs, which is resulting in pressure on the heart and fluctuations in blood pressure. It needs some more medical investigation and some more blood tests have been done, reports of which are still awaited. In view of this, the doctors have decided to keep Mann under observation for now and will take a call on the basis of the reports on Friday morning," a detailed official statement by the CM's office on Thursday evening said.
The statement added that doctors have said that the CM is perfectly fine and was not facing any major problem.
Provide CM's health details in public interest: Majithia There have been unconfirmed reports about CM Mann's health in the last week or so, with speculation doing rounds that he had fainted on the tarmac after reaching the Chandigarh airport from Delhi on Sept 17 and then was rushed back to Delhi for a health-related emergency.
However, there was no confirmation of this either from the govt or the Aam Aadmi Party.
The news about the CM's hospitalisation was first posted on social media by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia at around 11 am on Thursday.
The opposition leaders criticised the AAP govt for not being transparent about the health of the chief minister. Majithia said in a video posted on 'X', "He was admitted on Wednesday night and it was kept a secret. He fainted 2-3 times...Routine check-up doesn't take so long. CM holds a constitutional position and is a representative of the people. Therefore, information about their health should be kept transparent." Majithia, in fact, went to the extent of claiming to know the exact medical condition of the CM.
Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa posted on X, "CM Bhagwant Mann's health has become a subject of constant rumours. It's high time the Punjab health minister Balbir Singh addresses this by releasing hourly health bulletins. Why should the public be left guessing if he's in this or that hospital in Delhi or Chandigarh?"
Bajwa claimed that AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal had appointed someone with "severe health issues" as the Punjab CM. "Neither the health of the chief minister nor the financial state of Punjab is in good shape. The state is going through a rough phase and needs someone capable of steering it out of trouble," said Bajwa.
Majithia also appealed to the AAP govt as well as the hospital authorities to provide details of the CM's health condition in public interest.
The Akali leader asserted that the AAP govt had tried to keep the entire episode secret and added, "only after I tweeted on this issue today morning, did the government come out with a one line statement that the CM had been admitted to the hospital for a routine "check-up."
