MANDYA: The last rites of former chief minister SM Krishna is going to be conducted today at his ancestral village of Somanahalli in Maddur taluk, with full state honours.
The ceremony will take place near the family-owned defunct Café Coffee Day outlet, along the now-defunct National Highway 275.
Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, who is overseeing the arrangements, states that the family has decided who will perform the final rites. “Only sandalwood will be used for the funeral,?he says, adding that Bhanu Prakash Sharma and priests from Srirangapatna will conduct the rituals. The rites will follow Vokkaliga customs. Shivakumar also confirms plans for a public procession from Bengaluru to Maddur.
“The procession will stop for five minutes each at Kengeri, Bidadi, Ramanagara, and Channapatna to allow people to pay homage,?he says. The state honour ceremony is scheduled to commence at 3 pm.
Comprehensive arrangements have been made at Somanahalli, with bulldozers clearing space for a pandal and designated parking areas to accommodate the expected influx of thousands of mourners, politicians from across the country, and VIPs. Over 1,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure order.
In a show of solidarity, various trade organisations have called for a voluntary bandh across Mandya district, with only essential services operational.
