Visakhapatnam: Archbishop of
Visakhapatnam, Udumala Bala, expressed deep shock and grief at the demise of
Pope Francis, calling it a ‘great loss to the church and society.' He recalled his personal association with the Pope and described him as a humble leader who transformed the image of the papacy.
Archbishop Bala noted that Pope Francis had changed the traditional ‘royal image' of the papacy into that of a ‘simple Pope' and stood firmly for peace and justice. "He condemned war in the strongest possible words and consistently advocated for peace in Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Palestine," the Archbishop said.
He highlighted that Pope Francis was the first South American and the first Jesuit to become the pontiff, known for his strong emphasis on social justice, humility, and compassion for the marginalised.
Archbishop Bala recalled that he was the first Indian bishop appointed by Pope Francis in 2013, and most recently, the Pope had also appointed him as the Archbishop of Visakhapatnam. "It was a special bond, and I feel personally pained at his demise," he said.
Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 after battling a prolonged lung infection. He had been in critical condition in recent weeks. His motto, Miserando atque eligendo — "by having mercy, by choosing him" — reflected his commitment to God's mercy and humility.
A conclave of cardinals is expected to elect a new Pope within a month following the funeral proceedings.
Archbishop Bala extended "heartfelt condolences to the Catholic world" and prayed for the repose of Pope Francis' soul.
