Boimela 2025 to see many firsts, with a focus on Germany
Boimela is more than just books; it’s a vital part of Kolkata’s cultural heritage, that stirs up a range of emotions and memories. From engaging reading sessions, book launches to activities, the 48th International Kolkata Book Fair, starting January 28, promises to be an unforgettable experience. This year’s fair will be particularly exciting, with a series of many firsts.
Germany in the focus

For the first time in the history of the International Kolkata Book Fair, Germany will be the focal country, and the Germany Pavilion is set to be a highlight of the 13 day-long fair. “The pavilion will offer an exciting blend of activities, including performative readings, book launches, storytelling sessions, panel discussions on publishing. translation, and literature workshops for young readers, German language learning sessions, and live art installations,” said Astrid Wege, director, Goethe-Institut Kolkata.
What else to expect
  • An exhibition by Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya on the evolution of engraved illustrations in Bengali books
  • Germany Day celebrations on Jan 29, Children’s Day on Feb 2, and Senior Citizens’ Day on Feb 4
The year gone by, and 2025 marks the birth centenaries of many stalwarts such as Narayan Sanyal, Salil Chowdhury, Ritwik Ghatak, Tapan Sinha, Arundhuti Devi, and the 125th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam and Jibanananda Das. The 48th International Kolkata Book Fair also plans to celebrate their legacies through various sessions and activities.
