Why is Chhath Puja observed?

The festival is celebrated as a way of showing thanks to Surya for sustaining life on earth and seeking his benevolence for prosperity, health, and happiness. The energy of the Sun is believed to cure diseases, increase lifespan, and bring peace. By worshiping the Sun and Chhathi Maiya, devotees pray for divine protection for their families.

Chhath Puja involves fasting, bathing in rivers or ponds, and offering prayers at sunrise and sunset. The rituals last for four days, starting with Nahay Khay (purification), followed by Kharna (observing fast), Sandhya Arghya (evening offerings to the setting sun), and concluding with Usha Arghya (morning offerings to the rising sun).

The festival highlights themes of purity, discipline, and gratitude, and it brings communities together in devotion and shared cultural practices. Chhath Puja is seen as a time to reconnect with nature, showing reverence for the sun and water, which are vital sources of life.
