Holika Dahan, observed on the full moon night of Phalguna, marks the beginning of Holi celebrations. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil, centering on Prahlad's story from Hindu mythology. In 2025, Holika Dahan is celebrated on March 13 in India.
Holika Dahan, also known as Chhoti Holi, is around the corner. One of the most significant Hindu festivals, Holika Dahan symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. It is observed on the full moon night (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Phalguna. The two-day Holi celebrations kickstart with Holika Dahan. On this auspicious day, people gather around a bonfire in the evening and offer prayers, chanting hymns and mantras. Coconut, grains, and cow dung cakes are thrown into the fire as offerings. People walk around the bonfire and seek blessings. This ritual is believed to bring prosperity and remove obstacles in life.

Not really. Holika Dahan is the first part of Holi celebrations, it represents the destruction of evil, which is followed by Holi (Rangwali Holi), a joyous celebration of colors, and happiness.

Holika Dahan is a festival that signifies the triumph of good over evil. It revolves around Prahlad and Holika from Hindu mythology. Prahlad, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, was the son of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. Despite his father's opposition, Prahlad remained devoted to Vishnu. Angered by his son’s devotion to Lord Vishnu, Hiranyakashipu decided to kill his son and sought the help of his sister, Holika, who possessed a boon that made her immune to fire. She tricked Prahlad into sitting on her lap while she sat in a blazing pyre, intending to burn him alive. However, what happened next was truly surprising. Holika perished in the flames, while Prahlad remained unharmed. This signifies the destruction of evil and the protection of righteousness.
