NEW DELHI: Both Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) find themselves in a tricky situation heading into their crucial IPL clash at Eden Gardens on Thursday.
With just one win from three matches, both teams are desperate to get back on track after suffering two losses in their last three games. While SRH sit at No. 8 on the points table, KKR are languishing at the bottom, making this fixture a must-win for both sides.
KKR’s home form has been under scrutiny, particularly after their seven-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The Eden Gardens pitch, traditionally known for its balanced nature, has not played in their favor, with their bowlers struggling against quality batting lineups.
Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Varun Chakravarthy, despite his recent success in the Champions Trophy, has been expensive, conceding over ten runs per over in the last game.
The absence of a reliable pacer like Mitchell Starc has further weakened their bowling attack.
Interestingly, Starc, who was released by KKR before the mega auction, delivered a match-winning five-wicket haul (5/35) for Delhi Capitals against SRH in their last game. Additionally, Anrich Nortje remains unavailable due to injury, leaving KKR’s pace attack lacking firepower.
KKR’s batting also needs a boost, with retained players like Venkatesh Iyer (just nine runs in two innings), Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell struggling to find form. The team management is under pressure to make some tough selection calls to regain their lost momentum.
SRH, on the other hand, have experienced a sharp decline in their batting form after their record-breaking 286/6 in the opening match. They have failed to cross 200 in their last two games, with their aggressive approach leading to batting collapses. Against Delhi Capitals, they were bundled out for just 163, exposing their inconsistency.
However, their bowling, led by captain Pat Cummins and Bengal's very own Mohammed Shami, remains a strong suit. Shami's familiarity with Eden Gardens conditions could prove pivotal as SRH look to exploit KKR’s vulnerable batting lineup.
KKR vs SRH: Overall Head-to-Head Record

Historically, KKR have dominated this rivalry, winning 19 out of the 28 encounters, while SRH have managed just nine victories. But with both teams desperate for a turnaround, Thursday’s match promises to be a high-stakes battle at Eden Gardens.
