It was high time that the New York Mets management got lashed out by sports critics. The fans have been calling out the management for a good while now, for their delayed momentum to re-hiring their star player Pete Alonso. Recently, sports critic Joe Benigno lashed out at the Mets owner Steve Cohen, for keeping fans waiting for Alonso's signing for the 2025 MLB season. Here's everything on Benigno's statement.
Joe Benigno called out the Mets owner for delaying the Pete Alonso signing
The 2025 MLB season is almost around the corner and Pete Alonso has remained unsigned. New York Mets fans have kept their hopes high since day one of the offseason, but things have turned out to be slower than expected. There hasn’t been any positive news regarding Alonso's signing with the Mets.
This has not just turned the fans unimpressed but also angry at the Mets management. Recently, sports radio host Joe Benigno lashed out at the Mets owner Steve Cohen for not re-signing Pete Alonso for the 2025 MLB season yet. Sharing his take during Thursday's appearance on WFAN, Benigno said:
"Do I want Pete back? Of course. … The boy genius, (Mets president of baseball operations David) Stearns, because let’s be honest, he’s smarter than everybody in the freaking room, doesn’t want him back. And the guy that I blame is the owner.""I thought Stevie Cohen had a feel for the fan base, OK. You know what they’re pulling now with this, ‘Oh, Vlad Guerrero. We’re gonna get Vlad Guerrero.’ You know what? Screw Vlad Guerrero. I want my guy,” Benigno further added.
Moving forward in his statement, Joe Benigno claimed that Steve Cohen doesn't "have a feel for the fanbase." What the fanbase has been wanting since day one of the offseason is Pete Alonso's signing. However, Benigno feels that Cohen hasn't been caring much about the fans' ‘wants’. Hinting at the same, he said:
“I’m tired of it. From Tom Seaver to Darryl Strawberry to Ray Knight to Kevin Mitchell to David Murphy to David Cone to Zack Wheeler. Now, Steve Cohen is doing the same thing. I am beyond livid. I blame Cohen. To me, it’s on the owner. Cohen is supposed to have a feel for the fanbase. He walks around with the Mets cap on and the whole nine hours. It’s on you, Stevie, to bring this guy back where he belongs."The TOI Sports Desk excels in a myriad of roles that capture the ...
