Donald Trump’s announcement on April 2, 2025, regarding the
presidential tariffs has pushed the world to the brink of an
economic recession. With stock markets crashing heavily worldwide post the announcement and the raging trade war between the USA and China, the volatility has increased in international trade relations. Commenting on the ongoing crisis and controversy, Irish fighter
Conor McGregor has sided with Trump while going against the stance taken by the Irish government.

McGregor, ever since his last visit to the Oval Office, has been actively vouching for a career in politics. While eyeing the presidential run, the fighter has expressed his desire to put in efforts for the development of his motherland, primarily focusing on the mass migration issue. The Notorious has claimed to be an ardent supporter of US President Donald Trump and boasts of support from the POTUS while pitching his candidacy for the presidential run in Ireland.
During his talk with Tucker Carlson, McGregor was asked about his opinion on Trump, to which the fighter responded in a positive tone.
“I think he is doing very, very well.” The fighter stated that he was present at Trump’s 2016 inaugural ceremony in an unofficial way. McGregor was there for his second world championship title when Trump was also elected as the president. While the fighter was pretty much non-political then and more focused on his “craft”, post-COVID, things took a turn for the Notorious.

McGregor drew a stark emotional distinction between the two times Trump was elected and sworn in as the president. While in 2016 it was mostly fear and anxiety that the fighter perceived, 2024 had more of an elation- and excitement-filled emotion in the air during the sworn-in ceremony. When the fighter was asked about his opinion on Trump becoming the president in 2016, he replied, “Let’s see, you know. Give the man a chance. He is not from a political background. He is from a different background, it’s interesting. Let us see. And I thought he done well.”
While the fighter agreed that there might have been some kind of resentment towards the end of Trump’s term, he believes that the president has started off well this time.
“I wish him well. I wish the country of the United States well. I consider them my dear siblings. We consider America our sibling. And I think it's going well and we are getting a good fair bit of energy from it.” Reflecting on the ongoing tariff situation, the fighter commented, “Even amidst the tariff situation that is going on, Ireland’s people have not seen the money that got to do with this and whatsoever. In fact we have been robbed of our own money. And yet we are supposed to be this wealthy country. Yet people of Ireland are struggling to heat their homes.”
McGregor further added, “So there are many people who are seeing this tariff situation as a gotcha moment for the government elite, but I don’t really see it that way. I wish our country to be prosperous, our people to be prosperous. That’s what my wish is”
When the fighter was asked if he was nit necessarily against the tariff policy, he replied stating, “Well our government says, ‘What good is tariffs. Tariffs are no good to nobody.’ Yet they have been tariffing the United States. If that’s the case, then why have we been tariffing them. Why have we been hitting them with so much tariffs? I am not so much against it. I am watching it and I wish for economic success for my nation. And you know Ireland deserves it. That’s how it trades. We play our cards correct in certain ways and you know that’s it.”
