Olivier Rioux stands tall as redshirt freshman and becomes fan favorite
Standing tall at 7-foot-9, Canadian freshman Olivier Rioux is set to make a big impact in college basketball as he prepares to debut with the University of Florida Gators. Even though he didn’t play during the Gators' recent NCAA Championship run, his presence has already stirred excitement, setting the stage for a remarkable entry into Division I basketball.
The Florida Gators celebrated their third national title on April 7, 2025, after a tense 65-63 triumph over the Houston Cougars. Battling back from a 12-point deficit in the second half, the Gators proved their tenacity and spirit. Senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. was instrumental, scoring all 11 of his points post-halftime and executing a critical defensive stop in the final seconds to seal the win.
Rioux may not have stepped onto the field this season due to his redshirt status, which is a smart strategy for skill development and extending his eligibility, but he was still a key part of the team's adventure. His tall frame on the sidelines attracted attention, and he quickly became a fan favorite during the Gators' tournament run.
Originating from Terrebonne, Quebec, Rioux's journey to the NCAA is quite extraordinary. He exceeded 7 feet in height before finishing seventh grade and now holds the Guinness World Record for being the tallest teenager in the world. Before becoming a Gator, he trained at IMG Academy in Florida, where he evolved into a dominant center.
Beyond his plans for college, Rioux is looking to represent Canada on the national team and might even consider a future in the NBA. With his unique combination of height and talent, he’s definitely a player to watch.
