Injuries during NFL matches have become pretty common. In the last few years, the National Football League has become very careful about anything related to player safety and make sure the players receive ample medical attention. However, it’s not just an expensive and personalised treatment plans for the injured players that NFL takes care of; NFL is also pretty serious about the players who cause such an injury, intentionally or unintentionally. Many such accused players have been suspended or heavily fined so that they do not repeat such an action again the future. But this has not worked that well - players continue to sustain serious injuries caused by other team’s players. The most recent one being the injury caused to Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence by Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.
The infamous incident happened at the last quarter on 1st December when Lawrence decided to slide and Al-Shaair hit his head and neck which later caused a fight between the two teams. NFL has issued a three-game ban on Al-Shaair but it has caused many debates and arguments amongst fans and experts, while some supported Lawrence, some believe it was a mistake on Al-Shaair’s part.
The latest one to join in on this debate has been Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Thomas who highlighted how quarterbacks have been using slides to avoid hits. He recently posted on X how unfair this is and the usage of “fake” slides should be penalised immediately by the National Football League. On X Thomas wrote, "As dangerous as hits on a quarterback are when the quarterback chooses to slide, we need to stop allowing quarterbacks to fake slide or late slide in order to gain yardage and confuse the defenders. It would go a long way towards taking those terrible hits out of the game and making things more safe for the quarterback and for the defender."
