The NHL debuted a new front-office application to revamp how clubs handle roster, contract, and salary cap data. It was created jointly with SAP, the app being aimed at Apple iPads so general managers and league executives would have immediate access to key data such as Central Registry data, long-term injury status, and no-trade and no-move provisions.
Features of the SAP-NHL front office app
The NHL first introduced iPads to be used by players and coaches during games eight years ago, and now, this new technology is set to help front offices make trades, sign free agents, and monitor contracts more effectively.
The app has three main sections. First is the league perspective that shows each team's actual and expected cap status, daily transaction notifications, player watch lists, and draft pick information, including trade terms. Next is the team perspective that offers an in-depth view of contract details for all players on the roster, through the next eight years. Finally, there is the player perspective which contains biographical information, contract details, transaction history, and games played.
NHL executives applaud the app's potential impact
Columbus Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell commented on the usefulness of the app for speedy decision-making. “And with any new app, it’s only going to continue to get better, so we’re excited about it,” Waddell said. “But I think the features that they’re offering right now is certainly something that we’re all going to be able to utilize.”
NHL Chief Operating Officer Stephen McArdle highlighted the app's integration into improving team business, likening it to earlier tech breakthroughs for coaches and fan interaction. SAP VP of Global Sponsorships Dan Fleetwood seconded this, implying the app might assist in roster adjustments. “We’re currently focused on super-serving the clubs in the front office,” McArdle said. “There is so much information in this version that we think it is most appropriate for the front offices and for the clubs. Down the road, who knows, but right now it’s not our focus.”
As opposed to mainstream fan-based websites like CapFriendly, PuckPedia, and CapWages, the app is solely intended for NHL clubs. Though it will ultimately see release on iPhones, McArdle confirmed there's no public release planned.
