NEW DELHI: Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy have made history by becoming the first Indian badminton doubles pair to reach the quarterfinals at the Olympics.
The duo secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics 2024 after France's Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar lost to Indonesia's Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian in Group C.
Despite their second Group C match against Germany's Marvin Seidel and Mark Lamsfuss being cancelled due to Mark's knee injury, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are determined to maintain their winning streak at the Paris Olympics.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed that Mark Lamsfuss has withdrawn from the Olympic Games Paris 2024 badminton competition due to a knee injury.
In their opening match at the Paris Olympics, 'Sat-Chi' defeated France's Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar 21-17, 21-14 in the men's doubles Group C match on Saturday. The Indian duo showcased their skills and ended the match in just 46 minutes, despite the French pair's best efforts and the support of the home crowd.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, strong contenders for a medal, secured a commanding victory in straight games against the Indonesian pair of Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian.
The match, which concluded their Group C campaign in the men's doubles badminton event at the Paris Games on Tuesday, ended with a score of 21-13 21-13 in favor of the third-seeded Indian duo. The encounter lasted a mere 38 minutes.
Having already secured their spot in the quarterfinals on Monday due to the withdrawal of one pair and the defeat of another, Rankireddy and Shetty, the current Asian Games champions, aimed to top their group with this final match.
