The main event of WrestleMania 40, saw the return of a few
WWE legends. During the match, Cody Rhodes defeated and pinned
Roman Reigns to become the Undisputed WWE Champion. The match didn’t reach its conclusion before interferences from
The Rock, John Cena, The Undertaker, Solo Sikoa, and The Usos. However, the Chief Content Officer of WWE,
Triple H recently revealed that getting
The Undertaker to appear for the event wasn’t an easy errand.

Triple H Reveals The Rock’s Involvement in Bringing The Undertaker Back
Triple H revealed the trouble he went through to get The Undertaker to show up at WrestleMania 40.
He said, “It took us forever to get him to do that thing. A lot of that stuff comes together in the tail end. When I first called him for it, he’s like, ‘I don’t know. I don’t think I want to do it.’ I’m like, ‘80,000 people are going to go absolutely insane.’ It took us a little bit.”

He further stated, “Rock had to call him. Everybody had to call him to get him to finally acquiesce to do it. When he retired, he sort of wanted, ‘I’m just done.’ He didn’t come out with the hat and jacket. The hat and jacket are retired. ‘I’ll come out as me, but I’m not coming out as Undertaker.’ He just wanted it to be over.” (via

The Undertaker Was Not Part of the Plans for Wrestlemania 40
As revealed by Dave Meltzer a while back, The Undertaker’s spot at WrestleMania 40 was originally reserved for
Stone Cold Steve Austin. The Texas Rattlesnake was supposed to be the one to take down The Rock and clear the road to victory for Cody Rhodes. However, WWE failed to reach a financial agreement with Steve Austin and his return fell apart.
We haven’t seen Austin wrestle a match or be a part of one since his return at WrestleMania 38. Back then, Stone Cold came out of retirement to wrestle Kevin Owens. The Texas Rattlesnake has since said that won’t be coming out of retirement again. However, he has also mentioned that if he does, his choice of opponent would be CM Punk.

If he ever gets the chance to fight Stone Cold, it would be a WrestleMania-worthy match and would surely excite a lot of fans. However, something of the sort ever materializing seems like a long shot at best.
