Apple is pivoting back to CEO Tim Cook's original vision for lightweight augmented reality glasses following the commercial disappointment of its Vision Pro headset, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter.

The tech giant has reportedly abandoned its recent project to develop AR glasses functioning as external Mac displays, instead returning to the concept of standalone smart glasses that users could comfortably wear throughout the day. This aligns with Cook's long-held belief that augmented reality overlays on real-world environments offer a superior, less isolating experience than fully immersive virtual reality.

Despite investing billions in research and development on the Vision Pro, which launched to technical acclaim but lackluster sales, Apple now views lightweight AI-enhanced glasses as the future of its wearable technology strategy.

Gurman reports that Apple is exploring multiple approaches, including a potential competitor to Meta's successful Ray-Ban smart glasses. While these wouldn't offer full AR capabilities, they would combine cameras, microphones, premium audio, and AI features with tight iPhone integration.

Development challenges remain significant, particularly in creating glasses that are lightweight and comfortable while housing necessary batteries and components. Internal testing has been ongoing for years, with a rare 2017 leak revealing prototype testing when a health and safety report mentioned an employee requiring medical attention during a test.
