India has given a befitting counter to Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus’ recent remark pertaining to Northeast and the Bay of Bengal and urged him to avoid rhetoric that could affect bilateral ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 4 urged Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus to avoid rhetoric that could affect bilateral relations, days after the latter’s controversial remark that China could use Bangladesh to extend its economic influence and referred to the landlocked northeastern region of India.
The remark hurt because China has a long-standing interest in India’s Northeast and, in fact, claims Arunachal Pradesh, one of the eight states (including Sikkim) that comprise the region, as its territory. It often marks Arunachal as south Tibet in official maps and unilaterally renames various places in the state.
