No Freedom for Yolanda Saldivar; Selena’s Killer Stays Behind Bars
Mar 28, 2025, 15.55PM IST
A Texas parole board has denied the release of Yolanda Saldívar, the woman convicted of killing Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla in 1995. The decision comes just days before the 30th anniversary of Selena’s tragic death. Saldívar, a former fan club president, shot the singer after a heated confrontation and was sentenced to life in prison. Now, after serving 30 years, she was eligible for parole but was denied due to the violent nature of the crime. Her case will be reviewed again in 2030. While in prison, Saldívar studied law and filed multiple civil rights complaints. Selena, known as the ‘Queen of Tejano’, became a cultural icon with hits like "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" and "Como La Flor", winning a Grammy during the Tejano music boom. In 2021, she was honored with a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
