Somebody I Used to Know: A simple story about a girl returning home and remembering a lost love, say netizens
All OTT platforms have been streaming movies that have the central focus on romance themes. Here’s one more that made an appearance on February 10: Somebody I Used to Know, starring Alison Brie and Jay Ellis. The story focuses on our overworked heroine, Alison Brie, who decides to make a trip back to her hometown to rejuvenate herself, especially when a new season of her docu-drama is cancelled. She returns home and amazingly soon bumps into her ex and begins questioning the person she has become. The male lead is enacted by Jay Ellis who was recently seen in Top Gun: Maverick.
Remember Something from Tiffany’s that debuted over Christmas? This too was a romance that focused on inclusion and making a socially and politically right statement.
The formula has obviously gone down well with viewers. There is another review by ryanpersaud-59415 who writes: “We, collectively, needed a movie like this. Somebody I Used To Know is one of the sweetest, most earnest, gentle romantic films I've seen in a long time. A movie about love and with no gimmicks….”
There is praise for Alison Brie too, who also happens to be the film’s co-writer along with Dave Franco, her husband in real life. Ruben Peralta Regaud, a Spanish reviewer gives it a good report saying, “Somebody I Used to Know is a good rom-com because it doesn't follow the expected rulebook of these kinds of movies.” Marissa Crenwelge the Tell-tale TV critic writes, “Somebody I Used to Know is actually a great representation of wrestling with your identity once it’s been set in stone for a while. Especially when you’re face to face with your past.”

Most romantic movies never get more than a 6/10 score, because that’s just what they are meant to be – an hour and a half of pleasant romantic moments and good-looking faces. Somebody I Used to Know fits the bill and ferguson-6’s review on IMDb completely nails it. He writes, “As consistently as January brings horror films, we can count on February to deliver Romantic Comedies released around Valentine's Day. Although, these days, even rom-coms tend to arrive carrying the weight of social messaging wrapped in inclusion, with a concerted effort to avoid ruffling feathers and hurting feelings. The husband and wife writing team of Dave Franco and Alison Brie, with Franco directing and Brie in a lead role, have managed to play by the new rules and still deliver a watchable film - albeit one that I found more sad than comedic.”Remember Something from Tiffany’s that debuted over Christmas?
