Former governor and deputy secretary of the Chinese communist Party in Qiannan prefecture, Guizhou province, Zhong Yang was handed a 13 year sentence with a fine of one million Yuan on grounds of misconduct that included salacious affairs with 58 subordinates and accepting nearly 60 million yuan in bribes, South China Morning Post reported.
According to SCMP, the former Chinese official who often is referred to as "the beautiful governor" for her looks is charged for indulging in sexual relationships with as many as 58 subordinates while in office.
Zhong Yang, 52, who previously held the roles of governor and deputy secretary of the Party in Qiannan prefecture, Guizhou, came from a humble background and studied history in university. She joined the Communist Party at 22 and eventually became a deputy in the National People’s Congress (NPC), according to the report.
However, a documentary released in January by Guizhou Radio and Television revealed that Zhong had accepted bribes and used her influence to secure lucrative government contracts for favored companies. In one case, she authorized the development of 170,000 square meters of land in a high-tech industrial park for a businessman she had personal ties with.
Additionally, Zhong has been accused of engaging in relationships with 58 male subordinates. Some entered these relationships willingly for the benefits she could provide, while others felt coerced due to her power. These affairs often took place under the guise of overtime work or business trips.
In April 2023, Zhong was arrested, and by September, she had been removed from office, expelled from the Communist Party, and stripped of her role in the National People’s Congress.
Zhong, however regretted her actions.
"I can't face my former colleagues, family members, or the leaders who have cared for and nurtured me. I am truly ashamed and embarrassed," SCMP quoted her as saying.
