'US stands strong with India, PM Modi has our full support': US on Pahalgam attack

United States on Friday said that it firmly stands with India against terrorism and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the Trump administration’s full support, in the wake of the recent deadly terror attack in Pahalgam.
"As the President (Donald Trump) articulated to Prime Minister Modi last week, the United States stands strong with India against terrorism and Prime Minister Modi has our full support," State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said during a press briefing.
Bruce said the US is in constant contact with both Indian and Pakistani authorities as tensions escalate following the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. She added, “The secretary encouraged both countries to work toward a responsible solution that maintains long term, I should say, let me correct that, a responsible resolution that maintains long term peace and regional stability in South Asia.”

She explained that conversations were ongoing at several levels within the US government and that secretary of state Marco Rubio had personally spoken with external affairs minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
"We continue to be in touch with the governments of both countries, as I mentioned, at multiple levels," Bruce said.
On whether the US calls for de-escalation were being acted on, Bruce responded, “We are asking for a responsible resolution from both parties. And beyond that, there's nothing I can give you, any other details.”
Following the April 22 attack, India has taken a series of retaliatory steps. These include suspending the Indus Water Treaty, shutting down the Integrated Check Post at Attari, and cutting the strength of Pakistan’s High Commission staff. The Indian Army has also responded to multiple ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces across the Line of Control (LoC), with recent incidents reported in Kupwara, Poonch, Tutmari Gali and Rampur sectors.
Meanwhile, US secretary of defense Pete Hegseth expressed condolences and support to India in a phone call with defence minister Rajnath Singh. “Today, I spoke with Indian Defence Minister Singh to personally extend my deepest condolences for the loss of life in the heinous terrorist attack last week. I offered my strong support. We stand with India and its great people,” Hegseth posted on X.
External affairs minister S Jaishankar also spoke with Secretary Rubio, stressing that the "perpetrators, backers and planners" of the attack must be held accountable.
