Marco Bezzecchi collarbone injury scare: What does it mean for the 2023 MotoGP riders' championship?
Marco Bezzecchi's 2023 MotoGP title challenge suffered a major blow when he crashed during the usual practice at the Motor Ranch in Tavullia, breaking his right collarbone. Team Mooney VR46 Racing on Sunday confirmed that the Italian successfully underwent a surgery on his collarbone.
Bezzecchi’s return to the track will be evaluated in the next 48 hours.
However, it is likely that the rider might miss the Indonesian GP, scheduled for the coming weekend. Luca Marini sustained a similar injury at the Bharat GP sprint and will be trying his 100 percent to return to the grid for the next round.
What does Bezzecchi’s absence mean for the championship?
Bezzecchi has been a surprise package this season, sitting third in the riders’ championship at the time of his injury, with just 54 points separating him from the leader Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia. While the round(s) the 24-year-old is likely to miss will be a major setback for his title hopes, it will also allow some breathing room for Bagnaia and Jorge Martin.
Martin, who is hot on Bagnaia’s heels with just 3 points separating the two, has been performing fairly well lately. The Pramac Ducati rider has out-performed his championship rival in the last four rounds, winning two of them.

Although MotoGP is unpredictable and things change in a flash of a second, Bezzecchi, at the moment, seems out of the championship picture. So that leaves Pecco and Martin in contention and going by the points difference, it is anyone’s title to lose now.
What if both riders miss the Indonesian GP?
In the worst case scenario for the VR46 Racing Team, if both riders are deemed ‘unfit for the race’, they don’t have a backup plan and as a result, they won’t be able to field their Desmosedicis on the grid. That leaves us with mischievous thoughts of having Valentino Rossi as a wild-card entrant at the Mandalika but let’s keep that aside already as he’d be busy with cars in Zandvoort.
