AGRA: A 40-year-old woman from Aligarh's Mandrak area has allegedly eloped with her daughter's 20-year-old fiancé just nine days before their scheduled wedding. The duo is also accused of fleeing with Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and jewellery, Police said on Tuesday.
The police said the wedding was set for April 16, with preparations in full swing. On Sunday night, the groom-to-be left his home under the pretext of shopping for wedding attire. Later that evening, he rang his father and said, "I am leaving. Don't try to find me." Roughly around the same time, the bride's mother also vanished — though without the courtesy of a farewell call. An investigation later confirmed that the two had absconded together.
Mandrak SHO Arvind Kumar said, "The woman's husband has lodged a formal complaint. We've recorded statements from both families and launched an investigation. Efforts are underway to trace the whereabouts of the absconding duo."
Authorities suspect the man may be hiding in Uttarakhand, where he is believed to be employed. "A search team has been dispatched, and local CCTV footage from bus stands and railway stations is being examined for leads," officials said.
A relative of the woman said the young man had started visiting the bride's house regularly and had once gifted a mobile phone to his future mother-in-law. The two remained in close contact thereafter, though no one imagined that the bond would eventually involve an escape plan.
