AHMEDABAD: The mystery behind the murder of a land broker,
Sanjay Chauhan, has finally been solved. A couple has been arrested from Patan in this regard.
On January 14, Dholka police station officials had recovered a body from inside a car parked on the Khatripur road. Post mortem report had revealed that Chauhan had been strangled to death. A gold necklace, a bracelet, a diamond ring along with cash and mobile phone had been robbed by the assailants.
Probing Chauhan's background had revealed that the government contractor-turned-land broker was associated with several women and was also known for his expensive habits.
"On the day he was murdered, he had checked in at a Gokul hotel near Gota Crossroads in the outskirts of Ahmedabad. While returning home, he was killed. We grilled several women, including prostitutes, who used to be in touch with Chauhan. However, nobody could help us solve the mystery," said an official from Dholka police station.
On February 5, the breakthrough came when the stolen phone was used for a few minutes. Police officials zeroed in on a folk singer, Dipika Sreemali, 35, and her boyfriend Pravin Badhiya, 24, both residents of Radhanpur in Banaskantha district.
Sandeep Singh, superintendent of police, Ahmedabad-rural, said: "We first spoke to the people living near the place where the car was found. Some clues came up during that. Some youths who were at a nearby bus stop told us that a couple had alighted from the car. They claimed that their car had stalled and sought help. The couple borrowed one of the youth's motorcycle to get a mechanic, but never returned. Later, Dholka police had been intimated about the bike theft."
