AHMEDABAD: Alarm bells rang in the
Narendra Modi establishment on Thursday after the government of India empanelled inspector general
Satish Verma and eight other Indian Police Service (IPS) officers of 1986 batch for the post of joint secretary or equivalent rank for deputation at the Centre.
Verma is the man responsible for the strong chargesheet filed by the CBI in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case and is being hounded by the Gujarat government in the cases of three deaths that happened in Porbandar in 1996 during Verma’s tenure as the district SP.
It was on the Gujarat high court's order that Verma had helped the CBI probe which spotted a collusion between the Intelligence Bureau and Gujarat police in fake encounters designed to bolster Modi's Hindutva poster-boy image. Verma's investigations have left room for further investigations against Modi and the then minister of state for home Amit Shah.
The Centre can expect strong resistance from the Modi government against the deputation.
As per rules, he cannot go on deputation without the consent of the state government . Among other things, Gujarat government is likely to argue that the noose is tightening around Verma as there are criminal charges pending against him.
