PRAYAGRAJ: A mudslide in a village in UP's Kaushambi district claimed the lives of at least five women and left three others injured on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 7am in Teekardeeh village under Kokhraj police station limits as a group of villagers, mostly women, were digging mud near a pond to use for house construction.
According to SP (Kaushambi) Brijesh Kumar Srivastava, the group of eight to nine people was busy digging when a mound of soil suddenly collapsed, burying them under heavy debris.
“When all the eight persons were busy digging the mud, a mound of soil collapsed on them and as a result, they were all trapped under the debris of mud,” he told TOI.
The cries of a woman who had narrowly escaped the slide alerted nearby residents. Locals from Teekardeeh and neighboring villages rushed to the spot and immediately informed police. A rescue team from Kokhraj police station arrived swiftly and, with the help of villagers, began pulling victims from the mud.
Five of the women were declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The three injured were rushed to the district hospital in Manjhanpur, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
