AMARAVATI: Doctors at Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur claimed to have successfully performed a rare surgery and saved a life.
The surgery is considered to be very rare in medical history as there are no references about performing the critical surgery to remove Gastro-Intestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST).
The doctors’ team headed by senior surgeon Dr Yekula Kiran Kumar successfully handled the surgery to remove GIST at an unusual and most difficult site at the junction of pancreas and kidney of a 51-year old patient from Vijayawada.

Speaking to the media, Dr Kiran Kumar explained that Samuel Sunil of Vijayawada had been suffering with body pains, stomach ache and vomiting for the past four years. He visited many hospitals and was unsuccessful to get the right treatment.
After conducting several tests, two corporate hospitals in Vijayawada told him that it might cost around Rs 10-12 lakh to perform the surgery. However, they have not assured the patient of getting fully back to his health despite performance of the surgery saying that it was very critical surgery.
Subsequently, Samuel’s family met Dr Kiran Kumar with the test reports and sought his assistance. After going through the lab reports, Dr Kiran found that the GIST was located at the junction of duodenum and jejunum and got the patient admitted in GGH. The GGH doctors conducted several other tests and transfused blood as the patient was found very anemic.

“The doctors have also explained that it was critical because they needed to stitch the intestine which might again get leaked and also possibility of bleeding is very high due to the location of tumor at sensitive parts.
However, Dr Kiran assured me of putting up the best efforts to remove the tumor. They have saved my life,” Samuel Sunil told the media. He said that they have performed the surgery under YSR Aarogyasri free of cost.
Dr Kiran said that it took nearly six to seven hours to complete the surgery. He said that the pathological reports of the tumor were also found negative and hence the patient is completely out of danger.
Dr Ch R Chalam, Dr Naga Santosh, Dr L Vamsidhar, Dr Anusha, Dr Venugopal and Dr Koti and anesthesiologists Mahesh, Anand Babu, Alekhya, Raghava and Kavitha were part of the team associated with Dr Kiran Kumar. GGH superintendent Dr Prabhavathi lauded the doctors’ team on performing the rare and critical surgery in GGH.
