Jallupur Khera (Amritsar): Self-proclaimed Sikh religious leader Amritpal Singh has threatened "statewide action" if police do not release his two associates and continue to pick up his followers.
Cops brought Amritpal's two associates, wanted in case of kidnapping and theft, for investigation to Amritsar from Gurdaspur district on Saturday.
Irked by the police action, Waris Punjab De president Amritpal Singh gave a call to the 'sangat' to converge at his native village of Jallupur Khera to discuss future course of action.
"If the police pick up our Singhs one by one and don't release them, then we have to start a statewide action," said Amritpal, adding that they would pass a 'gurmata' (resolution in the name of the Guru) against the police action.
DSP, Ajnala,
Sanjeev Kumar police teams had been sent to bring two persons - Lovepreet Singh and Jashan Sandhu - from different places in Gurdaspur district for investigation in a case registered against Amritpal and his associates in Ajnala on Friday. "We have not arrested them so far, but we are investigating the matter and taking their statements," he said.
However, Amritpal claimed, "It was wrong of the police to register a case under serious sections, such as kidnapping, merely on the statement of a person who is already against them and uploading venomous speeches on social media." Had he (the complainant) said anything against an MLA or an MP, would the police file a case against them, Amritpal added.
Barinder Singh, a resident of Chamkaur Sahib, had alleged that he was kidnapped by Amritpal and his associates from Ajnala when he had come to attend the 'Mahan Gurmat Samagam' at Gurmat Vidyalaya Damdami Taksal - a breakaway faction of the Chowk Mehta-based Sikh seminary Damdami Taksal. He said he was thrashed by Amritpal and his associates, following which the police had registered a case against six persons, including Amritpal, by name and about 20 unidentified persons under various sections of the IPC.
Amritpal claimed that Barinder had made objectionable comments on his 'anand karaj' (marriage ceremony). Denying any role in the alleged kidnapping and thrashing of Barinder, Amritpal said a large number of people loved him and what could he do if someone had retaliated.
Later in the day, SSP, Amritsar (rural), Satinder Singh said the police had arrested Lovepreet, while the other person (Sandhu) was allowed to leave as there was no evidence against him.
