Bareilly: A man has been arrested for dumping the body of a 20-year-old Dalit woman from a village in the Majhgai area who died during a failed abortion conducted at an unregistered clinic in Lakhimpur Kheri district, police said on Monday. A quack, a nurse, and the nurse's husband, all of whom were involved in the illegal abortion and disposal of the body, were also arrested on Monday.
The police found the woman's body in the bushes along Sampoornanagar Road with a cannula attached to one hand, indicating she had received medical treatment before her death. They added, "The woman was in a relationship with Sarvesh Yadav, 26, and the abortion, which took place on Saturday evening, was arranged secretly to hide the pregnancy. He took her to a private clinic, but the procedure went wrong and she died during the attempt."
The police added, "The abortion was carried out by nurse Sonam Sahni, who administered incorrect medications and injections at the clinic of Neeraj Chaurasia, a quack, in Naugawan. Sarvesh was already present at the clinic when the woman arrived. When her condition worsened, Sonam took her to her home with the help of her husband, Vicky Sahni. They attempted to treat her in secret but failed."
Later, they shifted her to a private hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Rather than informing her family, the group dumped her body in a remote area. "With the help of CCTV footage, we apprehended all the accused. A case was registered based on a complaint by the deceased's brother under sections of culpable homicide, causing abortion, and the SC/ST Act," said CO Yadvendra Yadav.
A source in the health department said they will soon seal the hospital after verifying its licence.
