BANGALORE: For 20 years he went unrecognised. But on Thursday morning, Shafiq Syed -- the forgotten star of Mira Nair's blockbuster Salaam Bombay was in for a surprise when his passenger sought his autograph following a report in The Times of India (March 5).
Syed, who is now an auto driver in Bangalore, said: "I was shocked when the passenger I was ferrying compared my photograph that appeared in TOI and asked me if I was Syed.

And when I said I was indeed the child artiste who went on to win the national award for the movie, she immediately sought my autograph. The last autograph I signed was in 1989. And 20 years later, I signed it today. I am thrilled.''
Not just that, the woman passenger told Syed not to return the change of Rs 50 and asked him to use it for his movie scripting.
Syed played the main role of Krishna in the movie as a 12-year-old who sold paav and tea on the streets of Mumbai.
