4 police posts in Chandigarh finally get in-charges
Chandigarh: The UT department has appointed in-charges for four police posts that have been operating without leadership for several months in the city. Some of these posts had been without a head for as long as eight months. During this period, neither a permanent in-charge was appointed nor was anyone given temporary responsibility, which adversely affected law and order in these areas.
The police post in Sector 22 had been without an in-charge since the removal of the previous in-charge for alleged misconduct in Aug 2024. The police department has now appointed sub-inspector Sudesh Kumar as the new in-charge of the police post. This area, known for its commercial and residential activities, sees hundreds of people coming and going daily. The absence of a post in-charge had been affecting general law and order in the area.
The Sector 24 police post had been vacant for the past three months because the previous in-charge was diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment. Sub-inspector Neeraj Kumar has now been appointed as the new in-charge of the police post.
Sub-Inspector Asha Devi is the new in-charge of ISBT Sector 43 police post. Sub-inspector Gurjivan Singh has been appointed as in-charge of Burail police post, having previously served as the in-charge of Sector 61 police post.
However, the police post in Sector 56 remains vacant as no in-charge has been appointed.
The absence of in-charges at these police posts was impacting the police stations concerned, which had to monitor these areas on their own. This had not only increased the pressure on the police stations but also caused delays in crime prevention and swift action. Citizens and social organisations had been demanding that permanent in-charges be appointed at these posts as soon as possible to streamline regional security arrangements.
Sources in the police department revealed that the overnight transfer of 2,763 officers, from the rank of sub-inspectors to constables, by the former DGP in July last year created a scarcity of enquiry officers (EOs) in police stations.
