Chandigarh: Three to four miscreants pelted stones at a Himachal Roadways bus in Kharar on Tuesday night and proceeded to smash its windows with iron rods and baseball bats. No one was injured in the incident, police said. A case was registered on the complaint of the bus driver, Raj Kumar. The complainant said that the bus was heading from Chandigarh to Hamirpur. When it was crossing the Kharar flyover, three to four persons waylaid it and attacked it with sticks and baseball bats, smashing the main windscreen and other windows. The miscreants were allegedly loudly proclaiming that they would not allow buses from Himachal to enter Punjab. Later, the accused escaped from the spot. Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu said that they have registered an FIR against the unidentified accused, who will be arrested soon.
"On the evening of March 18, a few mischievous elements waylaid a Himachal Roadways bus near Kharar flyover and broke its window panes. Police reached the spot after receiving information and ensured the safety of the passengers, driver and conductor. A case has been filed and investigation has been launched. The accused will be arrested soon," the DSP said. The police officer also urged residents not to take the law into their hands. He warned that strict action would be taken against those engaging in such activities.
The incident comes in the wake of reports of Sikh youths being stopped and flags of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale being removed from their motorcycles in Himachal Pradesh. On Monday, officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, asked Sikh youth to ensure that their vehicle papers were in order while travelling to the hill state. He also advised them to avoid travelling alone.
Gargaj asked the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, to take note of these incidents and instruct the police to maintain law and order. He said that some mischievous elements in Himachal Pradesh wanted to create tension by destroying the amity between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. According to him, the state govt was responsible for curbing such elements and ensuring the safety of people of all religions and communities. He asked Sukhu not to allow spread of hatred against a particular community. He added that Sikhs visited Himachal Pradesh to pay obeisance in gurdwaras there but it was unfortunate that devotees were being stopped, and Nishan Sahib as well as images of Bhindranwale were being removed from their two-wheelers.
