MOHALI: Municipal councillor Amteshwar Kaur on Friday alleged that former Punjab finance minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh had been subjecting her to mental harassment because she had refused to campaigned in favour of his son Jasjit Singh, who is the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) nominee from the Kharar assembly constituency. On the other hand, Harpreet Kaur Gill, sister of Kanwaljit Singh, alleged that the councillor had demanded Rs 20 lakh from them to campaign for Jasjit.
"We had outrightly refused her demand, which made her to level false allegations against the former minister," she claimed.
Addressing media persons, Amteshwar Kaur said that Kanwaljit Singh humiliated her last night at the house of Derabassi fire officer when she refused to join Akali Dal and pressurise her supporters to canvass for Jasjit. "I had been under constant pressure for the past one month as Kanwaljit Singh had even threatened me with dire consequences. Last night he humiliated me in presence of around 50 persons. I had a good impression about him, but he turned out to be a blackmailer," she said. "I am consulting my friends and family members and may file a complaint on Saturday," she added. She also announced her support for Congress nominee Balbir Sidhu. Clarifying his stand, Kanwaljit Singh refuted the allegation, terming it a conspiracy by Balbir Sidhu. "More than 50 persons who were present in the party are witness that I kept distance from the councillor. This is an act under desperation and frustration as Congress knows that they are going to be defeated in the coming elections," the former minister said.
