Neighbouring districts Chengelpet and Kanchipuram, as well as Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area, may also receive heavy rainfall at isolated places.

The rain activity is due to the strengthening of the easterlies and a cyclonic circulation hovering over the Bay of Bengal.

Between November 6, 8.30am and November 7, 8.30am, Ponneri received the highest rainfall of 9 cm, Manali 6 cm, Sholinganallur and Avadi 5 cm, Nungambakkam 2 cm, and Meenambakkam 3.9 mm.

Meteorologists attribute the heavy rainfall to a cyclonic circulation—a large-scale wind system—over the central areas of the southern Bay of Bengal, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. Additionally, the easterly winds necessary for rainfall are strengthening.
