CHENNAI: The family members of Karthik, who died in police custody at Kannagi Nagar police station on Tuesday, have filed a complaint against the police personnel of the station alleging that he was beaten to death. On Saturday, Karthik's brother showed Rs 2 lakh to the media and claimed that police gave them the money as bribe to silence them.

Karthik's mother S Ganga visited the Chennai city police commissioner's office on Saturday . “I saw my son's body at the morgue in Rajiv Gandhi Government Medical College Hospital at 6am on Thursday. I saw injuries all over his body and on the forehead. I found police boot marks on his thighs. The mortuary offi cials stopped us from taking pictures of the injuries,“ she said in her complaint. Alleging that the police didn't even give her a copy of the first information report, the victim's mother demanded the suspension of sub-inspector Bagyaraj, head constable Vijayakumar and other police personnel, and wanted a case of murder slapped on them.

Karthik's elder brother Rajesh said, “At least two people claiming to be police personnel came to our house and gave us the cash to hush up the whole thing.I didn't get their names. By bribing us, police have proved that they killed my brother in custody.“

When asked about the allegation, a police officer denied it and said a magistrate inquiry is in progress. A senior city police officer, however, denied the allegations levelled by Karthik's family and said, “We have suspended two police personnel in connection with the death.A magistrate inquiry is in progress. We are looking at the case legally. It would be meaningless to say that police personnel attempted to bribe them.“
