CHENNAI: Many parts of Chennai faced power supply disruption on Thursday night after a fire accident near Manali substation in North Chennai.
Tangedco managing director Rajesh Lakhani said the origin of fire was inside the substation. Fire and rescue services personnel were trying to douse the flames, he said.
The MD said the fire was not due to overload as the demand was not as high as that in summer. He said it could be because of some equipment malfunction.
He said 50% of the city’s power would be restored particularly in lines going to RA Puram, Mylapore and Pulianthope shortly. Teams were working on establishing a bypass line. The remaining also would be restored without much delay, he added.
However, residents in several neighbourhoods reported prolonged power cuts.
Power outages were reported in areas from Manali to Mint as well as key localities such as Velachery, Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, T Nagar, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Adyar, Perambur and areas near Chennai Central. Power cut extended up to Puzhal and Red Hills in the suburbs too.
Many affected areas were in North and Central Chennai. Many roads, including Anna Salai, fell into darkness. Traffic chaos was reported at Central and Ripon Building junctions.
