CHENNAI: Presidency College, Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College in Vyasarpadi and Queen Mary’s College are among the top five government colleges with highest number of applications for the 2023-24 academic year.
Presidency College has received 1,20,304 applications from 40,030 candidates. The number of applications has risen by 25,000 as compared to the previous year.

The competition gets tough with 106 students vying for a single seat.
The popular courses at the college are BCom, BA Tamil, BSc chemistry and BSc computer science.
Some city colleges had a 100% cut-off for BCom courses in the open category in their first selection list. The craze for arts and science courses, opportunities for higher education and financial aid for girl students pursuing higher studies and new skill courses for arts and science courses were cited as reasons for more applications.
“Our college has received applications from Kerala, West Bengal and Assam this year. Besides commerce, other undergraduate courses such as Tamil, history, chemistry also have attracted more applications this year,” said R Raman, principal of Presidency College.
Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College in Vyasarpadi received 75,468 applications from 29,462 candidates. The number of applications has increased by 35,000 compared to previous year.

“We have created more awareness among the school students from nearby schools. BSc computer science has got more demand even above BCom courses this year,” said R Sumathi, principal of the college.
Queen Mary’s College has received 64,000 applications from 24,256 candidates this year.
In all, more than three lakh students have registered for Tamil Nadu Government Arts and Science Admission (TNGASA) counselling of which 2.46 lakh have paid the fees. Of the applicants, 2.44 lakh are from Tamil Nadu state board and 2060 candidates from CBSE and 221 candidates from the other boards.
Officials said the counselling will start from May 29 and the classes for the first-year students will commence on June 22.
