COIMBATORE: A 45-year-old farmer from Peedampalli near Sulur in Coimbatore district murdered a woman who was rearing puppies in a shed located on his farmland on Monday night. The farmer surrendered to the Sulur police with a sickle, and the police arrested him on Tuesday morning.
The arrested person was identified as P Rajendran, a farmer from Kallithottam at Peedampalli near Sulur. He owned 7.25 acres of agricultural land in Peedampalli. His parents passed away 10 years ago. He was unmarried, and his three sisters married and settled in different areas in Coimbatore district.
He resided alone in a house located inside his agricultural field. There was an empty shed on the agricultural land, and his friend Muthuselvam, 53, told him that there was a demand for the empty shed to set up a kennel. Some people were ready to take over the shed and would pay the amount for it.
He agreed to rent out the empty shed to Ramya, 34, daughter of Dharmaraj, from Pappampatti near Sulur a few months ago. She kept three puppies in the shed and often visited to take care of them. She allegedly did not pay the rental amount or advance for using the empty shed.
Meanwhile, the farmer Rajendran told his friend Muthuselvam that the woman’s character was not good and asked him to take necessary steps to vacate the shed. The farmer asked her to vacate the shed immediately, but she refused to vacate the shed along with a small portion of a house. Her friends also spoke to the farmer over the phone and allegedly told him that she would sort out the issue through court.
In a fit of rage, Rajendran took a sickle from his house and hacked the woman to death around 10.30 pm on Monday. The woman died on the spot. He surrendered to the police with the sickle, and the police arrested him on Tuesday morning.
The police sent the body to the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital for postmortem. Further investigation is on.
