Coimbatore: A 35-year-old man was arrested on Friday for murdering his wife's paramour at Teachers Colony near Chinniyampalayam in the city on Wednesday.
The arrested has been identified as V Prabhakaran, 35, from Tiruvarur district. He was engaged in metal fabrication work at Thottipalayam Pirivu in the city. The deceased has been identified as A Mahendran, 46, from Venkittapuram near Sulur in Coimbatore district.
Police said Prabhakaran was initially residing in a rental house at Teachers Colony along with his wife Vanipriya, 32, and their two children. Meanwhile, his wife developed an extramarital affair with Mahendran. Prabhakaran repeatedly warned his wife not to speak with Mahendran and asked her to end the relationship. However, Vanipriya did not pay heed.
Six months ago Prabhakaran separated from his wife and was residing in a rental house at Chinniyampalayam Pudur. Vanipriya continued to reside at their rental house in Teachers Colony, along with their daughter and son. Prabhakaran, however, continued to visit his family once in a while. Mahendran had also taken a rental room adjacent to Vanipriya's house, and often stayed with her.
"On Wednesday morning, when Prabhakaran went to the house where his wife and children were staying, he found Mahendran present there. In a fit of rage, Prabhakaran took a sickle and assaulted Mahendran, inflicting severe injuries on his head, neck, cheek, and hands. When Vanipriya intervened, Prabhakaran assault her as well," said an officer from Peelamedu police station.
Prabhakaran then locked his wife and her paramour inside the house and fled along with his son. Vanipriya contacted Mahendran's friends over the phone, and they rushed to their help. However, Mahendran had died by then.
Police who were alerted of the incident, shifted the body to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for a postmortem. Vanipriya who had also suffered injuries on her neck and hand, was treated at the same hospital.
A case was registered and two special teams were formed to nab Prabhakaran. Around 9.30am on Friday, the teams led by inspector of police Kandasamy, arrested Prabhakaran from Codissia Road in the city. He was eventually remanded in judicial custody.
