Kedarnath yatra to remain suspended today due to heavy snowfall, Met issues orange alert

DEHRADUN: The yatra to the Kedarnath shrine in Rudraprayag will remain suspended on May 3 (Wednesday) due to inclement weather and the ongoing spell of heavy snowfall, the district police announced on Tuesday.
"The yatra to Kedarnath shrine has been suspended for May 3 in view of the orange alert issued by the Met department. The Kedar Valley has been receiving continuous snowfall," said Vishakha Ashok Bhadane, superintendent of police (SP) Rudraprayag.

She added that pilgrims have been advised to avoid coming to Kedarnath on May 3 and they should make a halt at safe places.
Significantly, the state government has already suspended registrations for Kedarnath yatra till May 3 in the wake of rain and snow forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The regional meteorological centre has issued an orange alert for May 2 and 3 saying, "Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning/hail/intense showers and gusty wind (40-50 kmph) are likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarakhand, while sub-zero temperatures are likely to prevail from evening to morning in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts, at places with a height of 3,200m and above."
