NEW DELHI: A 17-year-old boy, identified as Kunal, was stabbed to death in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area on Thursday evening, triggering widespread protests in the locality.
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the police have registered an FIR and assured that justice will be delivered soon.
Speaking to reporters, Gupta said, “I have spoken to the Police Commissioner regarding Kunal’s murder. He was attacked with knives and taken to LNJP Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The accused will be arrested soon. FIR has been registered and police are actively working on the case.”
‘They stabbed my son and fled,’ says grieving mother
Kunal’s mother accused the police of inaction and claimed the attackers had threatened her son earlier as well. “My son had a fight with some boys a few days ago. They beat him up while he stood silently. Last night, he stepped out to buy food around 7 pm, and by 7.15, we were told he had been stabbed,” she said.
She also alleged that the doctor who treated Kunal earlier was beaten up by the same group.
Hundreds of residents took to the streets late Thursday night and continued their protest through Friday morning, blocking roads and raising slogans demanding justice. Many were seen holding placards that read “Modi ji madad karo, Yogi model chahiye”.
Joint Commissioner of Police (East) Pushpendra Kumar confirmed that the murder took place in J Block of Seelampur and said the accused belonged to the same area. “We have identified the accused and teams are conducting raids to nab them. Two names have surfaced and if others are found involved, they will also be arrested,” he said.
Additional DCP (Northeast) Sandeep Lamba said the situation was under control and the police were “actively conducting raids” to arrest the suspects.
Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva appealed for peace and said police had been successful in arresting culprits in previous cases and would do so again.
