NEW DELHI: Amid the ongoing controversy over
Mamata Banerjee’s recent remarks calling the Maha Kumbh "Mrityu Kumbh" (Death Kumbh), BJP MP Saumitra Khan suggested on Wednesday that West Bengal chief minister should renounce Hinduism and embrace another religion.
Khan slammed Banerjee for her comments, claiming that she has been insulting Hindus and should convert to Islam instead.
He said, “Mamata Banerjee should leave Hinduism and join another religion. The way she insults 100 crore Hindus and makes statements against Hindus, she should leave it. Even other party leaders do not talk like this. Mamata Banerjee is behaving like a Bangladeshi maulvi. Nobody is stopping her. She should just accept Islam.”
Banerjee’s comments were made during a speech in the West Bengal assembly last Tuesday, where she slammed the Uttar Pradesh government over its handling of the Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj.
She accused the authorities of underreporting the number of deaths in the ongoing stampedes and remarked, "Maha Kumbh has turned into 'Mrityu Kumbh.' They (the BJP government) have hidden hundreds of bodies to bring down the toll."
Her remarks sparked outrage, with political leaders and religious figures condemning her statement.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also criticized Banerjee, accusing her of "hating Sanatan Dharma and Hindus." He stated, "Mamata Banerjee, along with the Indian Alliance, including Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, shows their disdain for Hindus and Sanatan Dharma. By calling the Maha Kumbh ‘Mrityu Kumbh,’ Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that she harbors hatred for Hindus."
Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, national general secretary of the Akhil Bhartiya Sant Samiti, expressed his disapproval, saying, “The Akhil Bhartiya Sant Samiti condemns Mamata Banerjee’s statement calling the Maha Kumbh ‘Mrityu Kumbh.’ Hindus from across Eastern India, including West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, come here for the 'Amrit Snan.' Your words show your discomfort with this, but remember, the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal will prove to be a ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ for your political career.”
