Panaji: Expressing his support for self-help groups that provide midday meals, Goa Forward Party president Vijai Sardesai on Friday said he will question the chief minister for permitting Akshaya Patra to provide meals to schools.
Sardesai paid a surprise visit to a school where he asked the students if they were satisfied with the meals. He also tasted the food.
“These self-help groups are doing a commendable job by providing nutritious, home-made food to school children,” said Sardesai. He said that SHGs led by women were given the contracts to supply mid-day meals to empower them.
“These women are working hard and providing excellent service, whereas Akshaya Patra relies on donations. I want to understand the reasons behind the chief minister’s support for Akshaya Patra. I will raise this issue in the forthcoming assembly session,” he said.
