Goa's chief minister promises environmental assessment for new Konkan Railway stations, if required

Goa's chief minister promises environmental assessment for new Konkan Railway stations, if required
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant during the Budget session of Parliament, in New Delhi.
Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Monday assured the opposition that an environmental impact assessment (EIA) would be conducted, if required, for the construction of three new Konkan Railway stations proposed at Sarzora, Neura, and Mayem.
Sawant said the new railway stations have been proposed for crossing of trains and not for passenger movement and that they would increase efficiency and slash crossing time.
“I will urge the Union railway minister to have more trains halt at Karmali railway station, which will help passengers reach the state capital, Panaji, faster,” Sawant said.
The chief minister said state govt is not acquiring any more land to set up the three new proposed railway stations as they will be constructed on existing land. He also noted that there is a need for double-tracking for the introduction of a fast train between Pernem and Canacona, considering the load on the existing road infrastructure in the state. Govt plans to start a fast train service between Pernem and Canacona in the morning, afternoon and evening so that commuters can reach their destinations quickly.
St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar said the people have opposed the new railway stations and have even conveyed their opposition to the chief minister in writing. He asked whether any study has been carried out to ascertain whether these three railway stations are required in the state.
Transport minister Mauvin Godinho said that Konkan Railway started in 1998, and it was during that time that these three railway stations were proposed. “It will reduce one hour of train delay. An EIA was done when the project began in Goa,” Godinho said.
Opposition leader Yuri Alemao said govt should obtain written assurance from Konkan Railway that these stations would not be used for coal and passenger handling in the future. He also asked govt whether any EIA had in fact been conducted to construct the stations, as the villages concerned are eco-sensitive areas.
“If required, an EIA will be conducted at the proposed site of the Konkan Railway stations,” Sawant told Alemao. He also stated that the new railway stations have nothing to do with coal handling and other activities.
