Police have arrested block development officer Saroj Das for allegedly siphoning off Rs 80 lakh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

SILCHAR: Police have arrested block development officer Saroj Das of Lakhipur subdivision in Cachar district for allegedly siphoning off Rs 80 lakh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
He was arrested in response to an FIR filed by Bhal-Upa, an NGO of Hmarkhawlien village in Cachar district. The NGO alleged that Das and his compatriots had siphoned off money under MGNREGS in Fulertol gaon panchayat in Lakhipur subdivision of the district.
As police were reluctant to take action despite filing the FIR, the members of the NGO of the Hmar-dominated village and local job-card holders gharoed Lakhipur police station last week.

Das was then arrested from Silchar and produced before a Silchar court on Thursday. The court sent him on a three-day police remand. He is being interrogated by the cops at the police station.
Police is on a hunt for Fulertol GP president Lalring Ring, GP secretary and a junior engineer of the block development office.
