Guwahati: Indigenous communities, organisations and political parties in Assam have demanded an apology from TMC MP from West Bengal Mahua Moitra for her tweet where she wrote “Mr Gogoi” as a replacement word for “sexual harassment” and defaming the greater Assamese community as a whole.
Moitra on Thursday tweeted: “My first of new Twitter series on replacements for unparliamentary words.
1x1 polls
Banned word - Sexual Harassment. Replacement - Mr. Gogoi.”
She was one of the opposition leaders to take a swipe at the Centre after the Lok Sabha secretariat recently released a booklet banning use of certain words in both the houses of Parliament declaring those “unparliamentary”.
Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad Assam (TAYPA) spokesperson Gunakanta Gogoi said, “Moitra has defamed not only the people of Ahom and Matak community, who use Gogoi as surname, but the whole Assamese community. There are certain political leaders in West Bengal who often use such derogatory words against the indigenous communities of Assam and also the state.” He said that such derogatory words against the communities will not be tolerated and demanded Moitra and the TMC to apologize unconditionally at the earliest.
Meanwhile, BJP MP from Assam and political secretary to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Pabitra Magherita said, “It is very shameful and unfortunate to see Moitra making such statements. It seems that she does not have any knowledge about the history of Assam and the country. Saying something against the communities of a state is beyond our imagination. She has defamed the Ahom community and the greater Assamese community as a whole.”

TMC’s Assam president Ripun Bora said Moitra’s tweet was not the party’s statement. “Whatever she tweeted was personal. She had written ‘Mr Gogoi’, which simply means only one person. Anyway, her tweet has created a misunderstanding among the people. After the party inquired into the matter, she clarified that she did not target any community and thereafter, she made another tweet clarifying that.”
Moitra on Friday tweeted, “Just for those sanghis twisting tweet to say I targetted all Gogois let me spell it out. Mister Ranjan Gogoi. Honourable MP, Rajya Sabha.”
