Water distribution schedule for Tungabhadra dam in Karnataka announced
Munirabad (Koppal): Due to the late sowing by farmers in the catchment areas of Tungabhadra project and Vijayanagara canals, authorities organised a water distribution plan for various canals.
Water will be allocated for drinking and crop protection based on the current reservoir levels, said L Basavaraj, superintendent engineer of Tungabhadra Project Circle and member secretary of Irrigation Consultative Committee.
The 123rd Emergency Irrigation Advisory Committee meeting for the 2024-25 period was held under the leadership of Shivaraj Tangadgi, the minister for the backward classes welfare department.
The water distribution schedule is as follows:
The Tungabhadra Left Bank Main Canal will receive 3,000 cusecs till April 10 for drinking water and crop protection. The Left Bank Vijayanagara Canal will be allocated 150 cusecs from April 11 to May 10 for distribution to canals 1 through 11A, depending on water availability.
The Tungabhadra Right Bank Lower Level Canal will receive 450 cusecs from April 1 to 10. The Raya Basavanna Canal will be allocated 200 cusecs from May 1 to 31. Additionally, River Supplementation will receive 90 cusecs, which includes water designated for factory needs.
The administration plans to release water from the Tungabhadra Dam primarily for crop protection and drinking purposes. Farmers are urged to use water wisely and to cultivate only approved crops within the designated irrigation areas. Authorities warned that unauthorised water use or the cultivation of paddy and other restricted crops may result in legal action under the Irrigation Act.
