HYDERABAD: AIMIM candidate Mirza Rahmath Baig is all set to be elected unopposed as an MLC from the Hyderabad local authorities constituency. After scrutiny of nominations, Baig is the only candidate remaining in the fray. However, the result will be announced on February 27 on the last date of withdrawal of nominations.
Only two nominations were filed for the constituency —Baig and an independent candidate Mohammed Rahim Khan.
On Friday, election authorities, on scrutiny of the papers, found that 10 members, who had supported the candidature of Khan, were not voters of the constituency. The officials then announced that Khan’s nomination had been rejected.
“There is no need for polling on March 13 as the election is set to be unopposed,” said an official. While BRS supported Baig’s candidature, BJP did not field a candidate. Congress did not have numbers to field a candidate.
Meanwhile, a keen contest is on the cards for Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahbubnagar teachers MLC constituency polls. Officials found nomination papers of all 21 candidates valid. In these elections, candidates contest on independent symbols but get the backing of parties.
Sitting MLC Katepally Janardhan Reddy won the seat with support of BRS last time. This time, BRS has not announced its support to any candidate yet. Though Janardhan is in the fray, sources said BRS may throw its weight behind PRTU candidate Chenna Keshava Reddy.
BJP is backing AVN Reddy and Congress is supporting Galreddy Harshavardhan Reddy. A key contender is P Manik Reddy of United Teachers Federation, an association with allegiance to CPM.
Harshavardhan is demanding common service rules for teachers. “Private recognised managements should pay 50% of the fee they are collecting from students as salaries to staff, maintain service records, extend PF and deposit salaries in bank accounts,” he said.
