JAMMU: The mortal remains of Martyr Neelam Singh Chib (9 PARA Commando), on Saturday were consigned to flames with full military honours at his native village Chak Kirpalpur (Dalpat) village of Jaurian in Jammu district.

Five elite Army commandos were killed during a search operation in Kesari Hill area of Kandi Kotranta in Rajouri district and Neelam Singh Chib was among them.

Earlier in the day, rich floral homage was given to five martyrs by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Northern Army Commander Upendra Dwivedi and other senior officers of Army and Civil administration in a wreath laying ceremony.

Following this, the mortal remains of martyrs were dispatched to their native places.

As the body of the martyr reached Akhnoor, a large number of people on bikes holding tricolors led the same to his home.

Neelam's mother had already passed away. He is survived by his father Gurdev Singh, wife Bindu Devi, younger brother Angad Singh, daughter Pavana Devi (08) and son Akhil Singh (05).

Later, the martyr was cremated on the banks of the river Chenab.

The villagers gathered in large numbers to bid a tearful adieu to the martyr.

As the pyre was lit, the elderly father, the martyr's wife and children were inconsolable. A contingent of the Army reversed their arms and fired gunshots in the air as a mark of respect to the martyr.
