Docs warn against toxic colours
Jamshedpur: Exercise caution and play a safe Holi as toxic chemicals used in colours may cause serious damages to eyes, advise doctors.
"The colours sold in markets contain hazardous chemicals and heavy metals like lead which may cause damage if these enter the eyes," said ophthalmologist Dr Shivani Sharma. "Those who wear contact lenses must be extra careful. If colours enter the eyes, remove the lenses and wash eyes well. Blink frequently and don't rub the eyes as it can cause more damage to the eyes. If there are any cuts inside the eye, refrain from rinsing and seek immediate medical attention," she said.
Ophthalmologist Dr Navin Kumar said, "Most colours, which are being sold as organic gulal, are fake. All contain chemicals. Also, avoid playing with dirty water as it contains harmful microorganisms which may affect not only the eyes but also cause other ailments."
A motor mechanic, Ravi Ojha, said, "Last year, my 10-year-old son's left eye was damaged after playing Holi. He is yet to recover, even after consulting several doctors."
Deputy town commissioner of the Jamshedpur notified area committee, Krishna Kumar, said, "Play Holi with natural colours made of flowers like palash."
